Why 1971

Every archive begins with a date. Ours is 1971, the year seven emirates became one country, and the year our record begins.

The brand was first called Archive Dubai. The name couldn't be registered, and in the end that was a gift: Dubai is a city, and 1971 belongs to all seven.

An archive, not a mood

Nostalgia flattens a place. It turns a country into a sunset, a skyline, a camel in soft focus: beautiful, interchangeable, and finally about nothing. An archive does the opposite. It keeps the specific thing, with its name attached, so that it can be found again.

That is the discipline. When a colourway is called Sabkha, we mean the salt flat: the crust, the bleached neutrals, the way the surface reads differently after rain. When we photograph an owl, we name the species, and we get the species right. Precision isn't a constraint on the romance of a place. It is the romance.

Landscape first

The collections are drawn from the ground: the salt flat, the mountain stone, the creek, the interior sand. Each one is a palette before it is a product, a set of colours that exists here and almost nowhere else, taken at the hour the light is honest about it.

Made in Dubai, in small runs

Everything is made here and ships across the Emirates. Runs are small and numbered, because a record is a finite thing and a warehouse is not. When a run closes, it closes. The entry stays.

What comes next

More of the landscape, more of the wildlife, and the field record that sits underneath both: the owls resident in these Emirates, photographed properly rather than illustrated from memory. An archive is only worth keeping if it keeps growing.
