The flag, in four colours

On 2 December 1971, the flag went up for the first time. Four colours, four ideas.

في ٢ ديسمبر ١٩٧١ ارتفع العلم أول مرة. أربعة ألوان، وأربع معانٍ.

Red · الأحمر

Bravery. The strength it took to hold this land.

الشجاعة. القوة اللي بنت هالأرض.

Green · الأخضر

Hope. Land that gives back when you look after it.

الأمل. أرض تعطيك إذا اعتنيت فيها.

White · الأبيض

Peace. And the open hand that comes with it.

السلام. واليد المفتوحة اللي تيي معاه.

Black · الأسود

Determination. What stays after the wind drops.

العزيمة. اللي يبقى بعد ما يهدى الهوا.

The design

The flag was designed by Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah, chosen from more than a thousand entries submitted to a national competition.
